When picking the right foam board insulation for your job, there are three main types:
- Extruded polystyrene (XPS): A closed-cell, rigid option with low vapor permeance that is made through an extrusion process that helps prevent air and water penetration. This makes it a great insulation foam board that is also ideal for structural panels in wet environments.
- Expanded polystyrene (EPS): Made from small beads of polystyrene that expand when heated to create a lightweight, closed-cell rigid board insulation. This type of foam board has similar properties to XPS, except that it has a lower R-value and higher vapor permeance.
- Polyiso board: A closed-cell rigid foam board, that features polyurethane foam bonded to facers on both sides. Polyiso has some of the highest R-values among insulation materials and the variety of available facers make this product ideal for roof, wall, ceiling, and other specialty applications within all kinds of residential and commercial buildings.
